Abstract

This study analysed the paradox of poverty amidst plenty among small-scale artisanal fisher-folk communities in Kendu Bay and Achuodho Landing Site, Kenya. The specific objectives were to: analyse the contribution of cultural values and practices to poverty among small-scale artisanal fisherfolk in Kendu Bay and Achuodho Landing Site; explore the perceptions and experiences of small-scale artisanal fisherfolk regarding poverty in Kendu Bay and Achuodho Landing Site; and analyse initiatives and mechanisms that alleviate poverty among small-scale artisanal fisherfolk in Kendu Bay and Achuodho Landing Site. The study adopted a qualitative research methodology. Data was collected using focus group discussion guide, interview guide and observation checklist. Qualitative data was analysed using content analysis. It is concluded that the small-scale artisanal fisherfolk in Kendu Bay and Achuodho landing site face multifaceted challenges that contribute to persistent poverty, including cultural traditions, economic limitations, environmental changes, and insufficient state support. The study highlights the need for comprehensive strategies that address these intertwined issues, prioritizing education, supportive governance, community engagement, and tailored support to improve fishing practices, enhance education, and ensure equitable market access. By recognizing the value of integrating modern practices with cultural heritage and promoting gender equity, the community can begin to navigate poverty and foster sustainable livelihoods. Ultimately, a commitment to adapting traditional practices to modern challenges is vital for improving living standards, preserving cultural heritage, and promoting economic resilience among small-scale fisherfolk. Effective interventions require prioritizing the engagement of fisherfolk in decision-making processes and addressing negative perceptions associated with poverty. It is recommended that policymakers engage with artisanal fisherfolk to develop training programs integrating modern and traditional fishing practices, while facilitating access to markets through improved infrastructure and fair pricing. Community-centric educational programs should be developed to promote sustainable fishing practices and preserve cultural heritage. Local governments should establish equitable market access initiatives and enhance outreach programs to raise awareness of poverty alleviation initiatives. Partnerships between local communities, NGOs, and government agencies should be strengthened to implement collaborative projects focused on sustainable fishing practices and market access, improving economic viability and preserving environmental resources
