| dc.description.abstract | The study is about the influence of new media (/x and facebook) on journalism practice in South Sudan the study was guided by the following objectives: To analyze how journalists in South Sudan use X and Facebook for news dissemination and audience engagement. To assess the challenges and risks that journalists face when using social media platforms, in South Sudan. To explore strategies employed by journalists to maintain professionalism, while using social media for reporting in South Sudan. The study adopted a a mixed-methods research design, incorporating both qualitative and quantitative approaches concurrently. The decision to use this approach was informed by the need to capture both statistical data (e.g., frequency of social media use, reach, types of content produced) and in-depth insights (e.g., attitudes, experiences, and perceptions) related to new media’s influence on journalism., the study used a sample size of 55, questionnaire and interview guide were the main data collection instruments. The findings revealed that Facebook is the most widely used platform by journalists in South Sudan for sharing news, interacting with audiences, and engaging with public issues. X (formerly Twitter) was also used, though to a lesser extent, mainly for official or professional updates. Many journalists reported that they use these platforms frequently, sometimes daily, depending on the nature of their work and access to internet resources. The study further established that new media platforms have improved communication between journalists and the public, providing opportunities for real-time interaction, feedback, and engagement. Social media has strengthened the relationship between media practitioners and their audiences, making journalism more interactive and participatory. Based on the findings of this study, it can be concluded that new media platforms, particularly Facebook and X (formerly Twitter), have significantly influenced journalism practice in South Sudan. These platforms have become essential tools for journalists, enabling them to gather, produce, and share news more efficiently while also interacting with their audiences in real-time. The study showed that Facebook remains the most popular and frequently used platform due to its accessibility, interactive features, and wider public reach. X, though mainly used for professional engagement and official updates, complements Facebook by allowing journalists to follow global developments and participate in media discussions beyond South Sudan. Moreover, new media has enhanced the communication link between journalists and the public, making journalism more participatory. Through social media platforms, journalists receive instant feedback, engage audiences in meaningful conversations, and give citizens a platform to contribute to national discussions. This improved interaction has helped strengthen trust and accountability between the media and the public | |
