The study investigated the influence of performance appraisal on staff performance in Ugandan higher education institutions, focusing on the University of Kisubi. The study's objectives were threefold: to investigate the influence of performance standards on staff performance, to determine the role of performance monitoring on staff performance, and to evaluate the effect of performance feedback on staff performance. A descriptive research design was adopted, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative methods. A sample of 148 respondents was selected from a population of 250 using the Krejcie and Morgan (1970) sample size determination table. Data collection utilized questionnaires and interview guides, with qualitative data analyzed through content analysis and quantitative data examined using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. The study reveals that performance standard, monitoring, and feedback significantly influence staff performance at the University of Kisubi. With performance standards having the strongest impact (β = 0.596, R² = 0.422), followed by performance feedback (β = 0.387, R² = 0.352) and monitoring (β = 0.653, R² = 0.336), the findings suggest that well-defined standards, robust monitoring, and constructive feedback were crucial drivers of staff performance. The study concludes that clearly defined performance standards, robust performance monitoring, and timely feedback were crucial drivers of staff performance at the University of Kisubi. These factors collectively enhance productivity, engagement, and effectiveness among faculty, underscoring their importance in academic management and development strategies. By investing in transparent standards, comprehensive monitoring frameworks, and robust feedback systems, the university can yield tangible gains in faculty capability and institutional performance, ultimately driving success and strategic objectives. The study recommends that the University of Kisubi prioritize the establishment of integrated performance management systems that encompass clear performance standards, effective monitoring, and robust feedback mechanisms. It is recommended that continuous training be implemented across all faculty levels to enhance understanding and implementation of these systems. Furthermore, the study suggests regular evaluations of these performance management practices to ensure their adaptability and relevance in meeting academic goals, fostering a supportive environment that promotes staff engagement, accountability, and overall effectiveness in delivering quality education.
