Assessment of Islamic religious leadership on conflict resolution in refugee settlements in Uganda, a case of Kyangwali refugee resettlement

| dc.description.abstract | The study was about the assessment of Islamic religious leadership on conflict resolution in refugee settlements in Uganda; A case study of Buyale refugee settlement. The study was guided by the following objectives: To examine the influence of Islamic religious leadership structures in conflict resolution in Kyangwali Refugee Resettlement, to analyze community trust in Islamic religious leaders as mediators in conflict resolution in Kyangwali Refugee Resettlement, to examine the influence of Islamic religious leadership structures in conflict resolution in Kyangwali Refugee Resettlement. The study adopted a case study design with both qualitative and quantitative approaches, the study used a population of 260 and a sample size of 155, questionnaire and interview guide were the main data collection instruments. The study field findings revealed that 79(52.6%) of the respondents agreed that the Qur’an provides relevant guidance on resolving disputes peacefully. However, 26(17.3%) were neutral on the statement and 45(30%) were in disagreement. Some community members perceive religious teachings disconnected from the realities of the disputes they encounter like those involving resources, domestic tensions or ethnic divisions. Field findings presented that the majority 109(72.7%) of the respondents were in agreement that the leadership structure among Islamic clerics is clear and well respected in the refugee community. Field findings presented that 92(61.3%) were in agreement that the community believes Islamic leaders keep conflict discussions confidential. However, 18(12%) were not sure and 40(26.7%) of the respondents were in disagreement. Based on the study findings, it is concluded that the community widely recognizes and embraces Islamic values such as peace, reconciliation, forgiveness, patience, and non-violence as guiding principles in managing disputes. These teachings are embedded in the moral and spiritual life of the refugees and are often the first point of reference when conflicts arise. | |
