Abstract

This dissertation explores the issue of case backlog and its impact on justice delivery within Uganda’s legal framework, with a specific focus on the Chief Magistrate’s Court, Entebbe. Case backlog emerges as a significant challenge in Uganda's judiciary, obstructing the timely and effective administration of justice. Through an in-depth case research of the Chief Magistrate’s Court, the research identifies the factors contributing to this backlog, including limited resources, inadequate staffing, outdated legal procedures, and high caseloads. The research further examines the consequences of the backlog, such as delayed justice, public frustration, and the erosion of trust in the judicial system. Utilizing qualitative data collected through interviews, observations, and document analysis, the research proposes practical solutions to address the backlog, including enhanced case management practices, judicial reforms, and increased funding for the judiciary. The findings provide valuable insights into the systemic challenges facing Uganda’s judicial system and offer recommendations for improving case flow management, with the ultimate goal of ensuring timely, fair, and accessible justice for all citizens in Uganda.
