Abstract
The study investigated the roles of traditional leaders in peace-building efforts in Garowe, the capital of Puntland, Somalia. It was guided by three objectives: to assess the role of traditional leaders in negotiation efforts for peace-building in Garowe; to examine the role of traditional leaders in mediation efforts for peace-building in Garowe; and to examine the role of traditional leaders in reconciliation efforts for peace-building in Garowe. This study used a descriptive research design with a population of 140 employees and a sample of 103 respondents. Data were collected using self-administered questionnaires and interview guides. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The In Garowe, Puntland, Somalia, traditional leaders play a vital role in peacebuilding negotiations due to their influential status and respected position in the community. They have the authority and credibility to effectively mediate conflicts, drawing on their cultural heritage. The study reveals that local population trusts them to advocate for their interests and bridge gaps between factions. By leveraging cultural norms, traditional leaders excel at promoting reconciliation and navigating political landscapes. Their contribution to sustainable peacebuilding is significant, as they foster dialogue and understanding through cultural avenues. Integrating traditional and modern conflict resolution techniques, traditional leaders can achieve successful outcomes. Involving them is crucial for the success of peacebuilding efforts, given their unique cultural insights and strong community connections. It is concluded that Research shows that traditional leaders in Garowe, Puntland, Somalia, play a crucial role in peacebuilding. They have significant influence and respect within their communities, allowing them to effectively mediate conflicts. Their deep understanding of cultural nuances and historical contexts helps them facilitate peacebuilding processes. Additionally, their strong interpersonal skills and promotion of inclusivity contribute to reconciliation. However, their effectiveness can vary depending on circumstances and the support and resources available to them. Nonetheless, their established networks can be utilized to mobilize support for peacebuilding initiatives in Garowe, Puntland, Somalia. It is concluded that traditional leaders in Garowe, Somalia are vital for reconciliation and peacebuilding efforts. They are respected and influential figures with cultural knowledge to address conflicts effectively. Their involvement is crucial for sustainable peace, as they collaborate with authorities and stakeholders to enhance peace-building processes. Traditional leaders also promote dialogue, tolerance, and understanding among factions to build consensus for peace in Garowe. The study recommends that traditional leaders can organize community meetings, cultural events, or peace marches to rally public support for peaceful coexistence Traditional leaders should receive training on conflict resolution skills to enhance their capacity to mediate effectively. Equipping traditional leaders with negotiation techniques, communication strategies, and conflict management tools can improve their ability to facilitate dialogue and find common ground among conflicting parties. Traditional leaders should leverage these mechanisms to address disputes and promote reconciliation. By incorporating traditional approaches alongside modern methods, traditional leaders can offer comprehensive solutions that resonate with the local population.
