Abstract

The study aimed at examining the role of women in development programmes, identifying factors that deter women participation in development problems and the challenges women face as a result of lack of human rights awareness in Wakiso District a case study of Makindye Ssabagabo. The specific objectives of the study where to examine the role women play in development programmes, to examine the effects of lack of women participation in development programmes in Wakiso District. The study used mixed research approaches which included a combination of both qualitative and quantitative approaches based on the purpose of the study and the nature of the research questions. The study used a combination of descriptive and cross-sectional design. The study’s target population included NGOs, CBO’s, civil society, local leaders and members of the public. Out of the possible target populations, a total of 44 were arrived at using purposive sampling and simple random sampling. The study revealed that there’s a big relationship between human rights and women participation in development programmes to achieve; it also reveals that cultural and social barriers play multiple roles in marginalizing women in development programmes. The study recommended that women should actively be against all barriers hindering their involvement in development programmes. For example by engaging in education, empowerment programmes. The study recommended the involvement of women in development programmes for instance in the social development, health, economy development, education. This will lead to enhanced decision making, reduction in poverty, equality and cultural behavioral change. The study recommends that strong policies promoting women inclusion and involvement should be put in place right from families, local government and at national level. Women are not just passive recipients of development efforts-but they are all powerful agents of change. By involving women development becomes more efficient, equitable and sustainable.
